Don't submit the spousal sponsorship portion only. Submit both parts, every document that is required and all fees, all together. However, being a PR and not a citizen, you should technically be residing in Canada for the duration of the processing - both steps 1 and 2. So my advice is to just send it in once you are done with your 2-month trip. There are plenty of aspects of preparing the application that take a few months (waiting for a police certificate, for example), so this may not be that big of a deal anyway. For citizens, they can actually sponsor their spouses even if they are out of Canada for the entirety of the visa processing, they just need to provide evidence in the spousal sponsorship portion that they and their spouse will establish residency in Canada once the spouse gets visa.
Thanks a lot my friend.

I asked earlier, but no one responded. Is it okay if I send my passport directly to Buffalo instead of the Fort Erie address if I'm including an Xpresspost envelope to have it mailed back to me in Canada? I only ask, because the instructions say to send it to the Fort Erie address if I'm already in Canada, but I assume that's just so that I can save on postage. I feel like I saw someone asking something along these same lines a few weeks ago. Anyone remember what that poster did?

I sent to Ft. Erie. I think it got there more quickly. If you can, include a prepaid USPS envelope. You can buy the postage online and affix it yourself if you're in Canada. If we had done that, it would have arrived at least 3 days sooner.

Really? Hmm. I think I'm just going to follow the instructions then and send it to Fort Erie.

You can't use Xpress post to mail back to Canada from Buffalo. Just send it to Fort Erie. It really doesn't take all that long (most times). And congrats.

Maybe there will be a cluster of PPR's as everyone had hoped. I just got my first, best, and only email from the 'beneficent' (today at least) folks from Buffalo -- PPR!

The date was within two weeks of estimate based on ddobro2's kindly maintained spreadsheet. For the record, I'm a 16 June 2011 applicant, spousal, and to my mind with a very straightforward application. We received only two communications, both via email. 1) Sponsorship approval at about the 30 day point, 2) PPR here just before 6 mos.

Its starting to sink in. Wow. Now I have to read all the posts about how to best go about this, as regards mailing -- yes its a mail request. Looking forward to seeing the fancy 'stamp'. I'm currently 'visiting' on BC's beautiful Sunshine Coast. I'm loving the rain a lot here today. Gonna go outside and get wet.

Here's wishing similar early Christmas presents to all, especially those waiting longer.

Wow, well congrats to you. It spent less than 4 months at Buffalo. So the visa exempt people aren't getting different instructions after all, huh? I'm surprised but I really shouldn't be.

:p :p :p ;D ;D ;D Our visas and passports just arrived! I am so excited! The paperwork says we don't even have to cross the border but can just go to the immigration office here in Calgary! Is that correct??? I would love to not have to make a trip down if it can be avoided!

Any answers??

You're right. In my last note, I said that Sponsorship Approval was in July, but it was 11 August 2011. So just under four (4) month.

Bureaucracy. Who does know? Perhaps they have tracking forms attached prior that still says 'request by mail', or maybe the app was 'approved' prior, or maybe they are waiting on the New Email Division of CIC to give them a new email template?

On related issue, since I'm 'visiting' right now, I'm planning on sending and returning via Canada Post via my wife's address. I'll be here through the holidays at least. The instructions don't seem to care. Just different addresses to use based on your address.

Great, congrats! So you don't even have to make an appointment for the inland office?
