No! You definitely don't have to go to Buffalo to pick up the visa in person. (This is just something that some of us who live a short drive away choose to do because it speeds things up.) Most people mail the passport in for visa issuance.

I'll be driving 15+ hours to get the visa stamp in-person. That's by no means a "short drive", but getting your visa issued in-person gives you the peace of mind that you otherwise wouldn't be able to have if:

a) it takes a month or more for them to stamp your passport and send it back to you
b) your passport is lost in the mail, never to be found again, requiring you to get a replacement passport and replacement visa.

If I lived in Alaska or Los Angeles, I'd still fly to Buffalo to get it stamped in person. But to each their own.

LOL Pharoh - I hear what you're saying! I live about a 6 hour drive away from Buffalo but I still be will be flying to Buffalo and my husband will meet me at the airport! Yes! We have all of this planned out already! That means we ready like right NOW! ;D

Question regarding name change:

For those of you who already went in person to Buffalo to obtain your visa - did they give you a form to fill out for the permanent resident card?

Reason I'm asking is because I'm trying too figure out which way will be better in changing my name - either now or after I get the permanent resident card.

I am sending our file in very soon. It has taken me months to gather everything together. I sent in my payment in September and things got delayed. We were waiting for her FBI report and then her mother passed away and then Christmas. Finally everything is together and should be filing this week. The only thing missing is the photos for her child who is 20 and will not be immigrating. Hopefully we can just forward these on.

I have my fingers crossed that the file will be in the mail by Wednesday at the latest.

No, there was no form to fill out. As for changing your name. When we went to BUF in October 2010, there was a lady who I think wanted to change her name. What she was told was, they would issue the PR based on the information sent through the application and any amendments such as name changed should have been submitted before issuance (I think there's a form in the web site to submit a name change). Since she failed to submit a name change, they issued her PR with the old name and she was advised to change the name on all of her documents later. It was a bit tricky for that lady though, because she already changed her name on her passport, so it would be so hard for her to land because the name on the passport and the PR are different. So be very careful.

***Buffalo Interview today***
So the process went smoothly no strange questions, just asked about how I met my husband, the wedding, and what we have been doing since the marriage. They issued the visa today as well. So not need to wait on the visa. I am so relieved to be done with immigration and now I can finally get insurance this week. I will land tommorow and import my car as well. I will post my experiance after landing.

sigh :(

congratulation glad everything went well

(on my side called the mp representative and he got no news)

Congrats! I'm so happy they issued the visa, would have been crazy if they didn't! Now it's just waiting for the baby to arrive :)

Congrats Jmni - you deserve it after waiting so long! I'm so happy for you!

Congrats Jmni!!!! :D

I'm a Canadian sponsor to a husband living in the USA...I'm wondering if its possible to apply for a visitors visa for my husband to come to Canada while in the process of waiting?
Anyone know? ::)

I do know that's possible, I was looking into that because we're going to be doing the same thing..... I went and looked up "dual intent" - has to do with having the intent to live in Canada AND temporarily visit Canada at the same time.
I do know that you both have to appear at the border for this......

Here's one of the helpful links I found..

The CIC site has a dual intent section also, but seems to deal more with students.

Hope this is helpful!
