I am an American living in Canada as a temporary resident. I moved here from the states last year to work.
I’m considering resigning from my Canadian employer and taking a job opportunity in the states that pays much better, is very flexible and has me working in a border city close to my home in Canada. With this being said, I’d like to keep my residence here, as I’m living with my partner who is Canadian, and I have finally found a good healthcare team here for my chronic illness. I have legal status as a temporary resident until 2023, and I plan on applying for PR through the FSW stream later this year.
I’ll likely rent a small apartment in the states for tax and payroll purposes, while maintaining my residence with my partner in Canada. However, I’m incredibly wary of the situation with the virus, particularly at the land border. I don’t want to be in a situation where I’m stuck as a commuter in the states and can’t cross back home. To add insult to injury, I’ll be traveling frequently, and my company will require me to have an American license and car purchased from the states.
So - where am I a resident? The states or Canada? Will I be able to cross re: Covid or will I get funny looks from CBSA at the border? Under the Quarantine Act, I’d be exempt from quarantining as I work in the states and maintain my normal residence in Canada...however I *also* will have a residence in the states, and must have an American license and plates.
I’m just really confused about the whole thing and it’s stressing me out. Help!
