Hi there,
I am in Canada with a temp visitor visa, temporary sin number, but not able to work without a work permit. I want to apply for a work permit then PR, if I go to the Canada/US border is it possible to "flagpole" and they will stamp me for a work permit? What documents do I need? My visitor visa expires Nov 2015 - Please help with any information. I also have an American Passport - from Holland.

You need a full time job offer from a Canadian employer and an approved LMIA (obtained by your employer) in order to qualify for a work permit.

Just to add... Since you hold an American passport, if the job offer you get is for an occupation covered under NAFTA - then no LMIA is required to obtain a work permit.

What if I want to work for myself, sell things at markets etc - not necessarily work for an employer but I do want to make money because at this point I can not.

There is no work permit available for self-employment. You need a full time job offer from a Canadian employer to qualify for a work permit.

Having said that, depending on your age and other factors - it's possible you may qualify for a working holiday visa (IEC). However I believe all of the IECs for Dutch citizens for 2015 have already been snapped up. See:

I would not qualify for that, and it looks like for 2015 is closed, but thank you!

So instead of trying to apply for a work permit, I would be better off applying for a PR since that is my goal is to be a Canadian, my husband is. There is so much information out there I am finding it hard to figure out what is the best to apply for and what order knowing it all takes time.

1. Why isn't your spouse submitting a sponsorship application for you? A lot easier that trying to emigrate as a skilled worker.
