Temporary resident status extension?

Hello, good day!
I am sponsoring my husband who lives in Canada with me, he should be getting his PR hopefully by December. His Temporary Resident status Is expiring June 21, 2017. He also holds an Open Work Permit which is valid till February of 2019.
Does he need to keep extending his Temporary Residency Status for 6 more months (every 6 months), or would the Work Permit be enough? Is a work permit a status?

Work permit is enough, no need to extend visitor status every 6 months.
