Hi,

I am a temporary foreign worker in Alberta, and been here for exactly a year. My work permit expires Aug 2015, and my employers will do their best to extend it if I do not get residency by then. I have already submitted my application for Employer driven nomination for Permanent Residency through AINP, which is being reviewed at the moment. If my nomination is approved and I apply for residency, it would still be around 18 months before I am a permanent resident.
Due to changes in family structure and having no one to take care of her back home, I need to bring my 70 year old mother here urgently and cannot wait until I get Permanent Residency. I realise I have to be a Permanent Resident to be able to sponsor through Family Class Program. How do I apply for her visit visa, how much bank balance needs to be shown, and what are my odds?
Friends, your past experience would be very valuable for me. Truly appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Yog

Your mother will have to apply for a regular visitor visa (she doesn't qualify for a super visa since you aren't a PR yet). To be approved, she will need to demonstrate that she has strong ties to her home country and has no plans on remaining in Canada long term. You can find the application instructions here:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/apply-how.asp

Unfortunately no one can tell you the odds she will be approved.

Note that being a PR alone isn't enough to qualify to sponsor your mother. You will also have to provide three years of Canadian tax returns that prove you meet the minimum income levels. So even if you became a permanent resident now, you would still be about three years away from being able to sponsor your mother.

Thank you so much Scylla. I will attach papers showing her strong family ties back home and personal assets too. Since she is 70 years old and not working, I do not know how else to convince the VO that she has no plans of staying in Canada long term. Also, I want her to be able to stay longer with me. Do you think I should apply for one year visa or only 6 months?

Also, if anyone has experience applying for visitor visa, in addition to personal assets, can you please tell me if there is a minimum bank balance (in home country) that she is required to show that will improve her chances? What is the minimum period the amount be shown as deposited in the bank?

All comments welcome :)
