I am a Teacher of English at Secondary school. (BA Joint Honours 2:1 in English & Creative Writing + PGCE)

We are looking at moving to Ottawa and just wondered if anyone could give a heads up on the job front?

Thank you.

I don't know if a PGCE is a teaching certificate or not, but before you make any plans on teaching, you had better have your qualifications evaluated by the Province of Ontario to make sure you're qualified. Then, if they do qualify you, you can apply for registration -- but once you're registered, teaching jobs are very difficult to find. I know Canadians who couldn't even get work as supply teachers, and would do part-time construction to survive. Ottawa is one of the most desirable places to live; it will not be easy to break in there. If you're willing to live in a remote First Nations community, it will be much easier to find work.

Yes the PGCE is a teaching qualification. I have checked with the Ontario teaching board and it is the only qualification that is recognised. Both that and my degree allow me to teach.

We are looking at Ottawa as that is where my wife's large family all live.

Not the best news.

Thank you.

Agreed that unless you are in a very remote location, you should assume there are more teachers than jobs and there's quite a lot of competition for openings (i.e. it's definitely an employers' market). I would assume it will not be easy to find a position. I know a number of people who have graduated in the last few years and are having trouble finding anything but substitute positions.

With PGCE, you could be teaching in top tier international schools in Asia earning a very good salary....housing and plane tickets provided. Too bad people think of Canada as some kind of place to better their lives which in reality is not even close to the truth.

This is what you'll need to be eligible to apply for teaching jobs in the public school system (sounds like you've already investigated):
https://www.oct.ca/becoming-a-teacher

Competition is fierce even among native CDN teachers.

You could probably TEFL or TESL in the private system without registration; competition is fierce, & dodgy schools with crap pay & 0 hours contracts abound.

Sorry to be Debbie-Downer :(

Extremely good, once you're full time in the public system. This caused me some initial trouble when I came here, since in the US we tend to judge whether a salary is acceptable or not based on teachers; if you're earning as much as a teacher, it's not enough.

Things like if it is needed to get certification for TESL, if you need additional training and where you could do that, etc.
