Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
It just seems like things are not only slowing down but moving backwards. My husband just got a letter from Canadian Revenue saying that we owe $56.00 (small beans I know, luckily) and that aren't eligible for OSTC because we make over $38,000 for 2011. WTF? Where did they get this number? They assessed him at the low $20,000s for 2010. DEAR CRA: I DON'T WORK!!!! I am ready to rip someone's head off! Can someone please explain to me or share a similar story?

My situation:
Came to Canada-April 23,2010 to prepare for wedding in June
Last day of work in U.S.-April 19, 2010
Last U.S. paycheck-May 2010
My husband is the sole income for us since I got here.

I can understand them adding my income in for 2010 but not for this year. I can't work. Help!
Thanks in advance

Who knows what lies behind the errors that CRA makes? Perhaps CRA is just trying to shake the tree and see what apples fall to the ground, maybe hoping that you do in fact make more money and will happily pay the tax.

What I would do is explain the situation in a letter, and return it plus a copy of CRA's letter to the return address. Ask clearly for the tax to be cancelled, and for CRA to remit to you the benefits your supposedly lost because of your "high" income.

Keep the CRA letter to you, as reference in future.

Thanks Toby. Hubby, me and mother in law are going to the tax center here and straighten this crap out. They totally screwed up and that B*** from HR Block f*** up our $H** because we just got a letter saying my husband was married in 2009 (not even) and he made $100,000,000 (just making up a ridiculous number because their number was ridiculous). Unless he married someone else without telling me, they got some 'splaining to do.

There is another possibility (although I'm hoping this isn't what has caused problems for you).

Several years ago a friend of mine had his SIN stolen (meaning someone who wasn't legally allowed to work in Canada got his hands on it and passed it off as his own). My friend didn't find out until it came time to do his taxes and he was accused by CRA of making more money than he actually had. It took some work to prove his SIN had been stolen and it wasn't actually him working the second job.

Hi Scylla

OOMG! I hope this isn't the case but we are going on Tues. to rip the CRA a new Ahole errr...I mean to correct whatever error has occured. So by Wed. we should (crossing fingers) have this all sorted. Hubby did lose his PR and Sin Card but he reported it really fast to all the necessary people. Wish us luck! I'll let you all know how it turns out.

Good luck!!! Let us know how things go!

Hi Folks

Today everloving Hubby called CRA and sorted all our stuff out. Not that I agree with what they've done but they added my U.S. income in 2010 to his income for that year. They also doubled our income in one letter. So what we need to do is send in my U.S.A tax return with a letter stating to them that we want them to review what they've done. They did concede they didn't double check their inputs. And they also used my income with his income because we were in a relationship blah blah blah. I don't agree with it, but I'm all tuckered out from this experience. We are just going to submit the letter and go from there. They also said we don't have to pay any money until they figure everything out. Now I get to spend a day with hubby. Weeeeeee!
