Apologies if this is the wrong forum, this is the forum I tend to post in most and find the most help in.

My wife and I are in the middle of the PR application process. She came to Canada October 29th, 2009, we got married March 13th, 2010, and submitted our inland PR application October 8th, 2010. (long wait, i know).

We found out we could apply for the child tax credit for her daughter who is living with us in Canada, and to do so we needed to get her in the revenue canada system. She submitted a nil return for 2009 to the revenue canada nternational tax service office a few months ago, they haven't gotten around to processing it, so she doesn't have a tax number yet.

I like to file my taxes early, as early as I can really as I usually wangle a refund from them, and I have all the forms and stuff I need.

Can we file as a normal married couple? Do I need to wait for CRA to process the 2009 return and issue her a tax number? Or should I go ahead and file the return, leaving the space where I would put my spouses SIN blank? She is declaring no income for 2010 ( she does not have a work permit or the right to work yet ) Or will this cause huge problems and tie things up in red tape?

I'm only asking because I'm sure some of you are in the same position, wanted to know how you handled this and what was the outcome.

Thanks in advance,

Arron

You can declare her with no SIN but you will not get GST rebate if you are eligible for it, until you provide proof of her (non-existent) income.
