Folks,

I have moved back to India after filing PR-CEC in Canada...Now its time to file my tax return and I am using H&R block to file my tax and its not allowing me to move forward without entering my wife's SIN, but she has no SIN number....I know some softwares allow people to use 000000000 inlieu of SIN number.

So any suggestions for H& R block? or is there any better tax filing software?

I know this topic is more on tax return then PR, but i hope you may help!

Use turbo tax, its free if u have basic income, I used it along with my wife with 000000000, and it works

Thanks! But using 0's as SIN for spouse would give us the right tax discount? I am wonderign whether we have to get Individual tax number or temporary tax number instead of using 0's.

Yes it will. If you want temporary SIN then call CRA and request a temporary SIN. BTW Did your wife have/had any status in Canada before ?

Use Studiotax, It does not ask SIN for Spouse if they dont have. I tried it yesterday and went successfully.

Hi Goku, Yes she was there in Canada with me for 13 months as visitor ....

Ok then I am not sure if you are aware that you don't have to file Tax-return for your wife in Canada as she temporary resident. You have to file your wife's tax return in India. But if its regard to information of your spouse in your tax return then just check non-resident column, and mention current country of residence. You don't have to enter SIN for your wife as she was temporary Resident i.e. is Visitor. Do not enter 000-000-000. Just leave it blank.

I had the same situation, my wife was with me on visitor visa for more than 6 months and I was advised by CRA (I called them) to file tax return as she stayed for more than 6 months (long period). My wife didnt have any income (NO CCTB/UCTB), but still we filled it without SIN. Then came the twist, CRA didnt process her return and asked us to apply for TIN. We applied and attached it to her return. We got assessment within a week.

In short, if the rule hasnt changed from last year, Please file your wife's return with application for TIN. CRA needs a # to tag the return to. Since she lived in Canada for more than 6 months, I would suggest to file return in Canada.

Thanks cecstatchk!

We were able to get hold of CRA from India and they confirmed that you had mentioned, now we have to file manually from India, also for information, last date for filing is 5th May instead of 30th April.
