No - you can't work if you take an unplanned semester off. You can only continue working if you remain in school.

Sure - you can apply for PR if you qualify. Note that if you stop attending school for more than 90 days your study permit will be automatically canceled.

Post June 2014, your school is responsible for reporting students to CIC, if not registered for courses. You might end up with refusal during SP extension or PGWP application.
