If you have any experience in customer service I would suggest trying to get a job in a hotel. The fancier the brand, higher the pay.

For example, I worked in a pretty good brand of hotels, comparable to the Marriott, in Ottawa for 6 years as a front desk agent and by the time I left I was making about 18$ per hour. I think the starting rate was around 16$ per hour.

After that I worked in a less fancy hotel, but still made 15$ per hour.

You don't need degrees or diplomas for this job. You just need to be friendly and efficient. Jobs as bell boys in hotels are pretty good too. Your starting wage would be a little less but cash tips are what makes it worth while.

Most hotels are unionized, meaning that if you have a full time position, you are also eligible for benefits after your probation period which is usually 3-6 months. In a unionized place, a dishwasher can earn close to 20$ per hour. I am not joking.

Hope this helps! Good luck!
Thanks CaroM8 for the helpful info

I'd like to ask you about my chances to work as an HR specialist in a hotel as I have 2 years of experience in a hotel brand (Hilton) and what are the high pay hotel jobs from your point of view? I don't mind shifting my career to an operations position since it may lead to hotel management position.

I think you need some kind of diploma to be in HR, I'm not sure.

As for other hotel positions, if you are interested in management, I would start as a front desk agent and work your way up. Like I said before, I worked as a front desk agent for 6 years before, within 2 I was offered supervisor position and probably could've been front desk manager in another 2 years. I didn't take that route as I had other priorities at the time, but just to show you how hotel stuff works. So you'll be in Toronto? Check out these brands of hotels: Sheraton, Westin, Marriott, Fairmont, Hilton, Four Seasons and Delta.

Is there a reason you want to work as a clerk at the front desk of a hotel? Not really an entry level job especially in the daytime at mid to high end hotels. Also not a job that is constantly demand. Things like working in retail, restaurants or general labour are the most frequent "survival" jobs. Definitely wouldn't work in a hotel as a front desk permit before you arrive.
