Just wondering if anyone has experience getting a study permit changed over to a visitor status while waiting for PR to be finished?

I'm currently on a study permit (expires March 2016) and we have sponsor approval on our outland common-law application (so just waiting for the decision made part whenever London decides to get into gear).

I do not intend on starting the next semester in September due to 1) not really wanting to pay international fees when I can be paying domestic fees in the near future and 2) having a 4 month old baby now that I don't really want to be putting in daycare yet! (and paying for daycare on top of international fees while not working!)

If I apply for a visitor status online what are the chances of getting the 6 months (or more?) and do you think voluntarily asking for my study permit to be revoked is an issue or understandable in the circumstances?
I know it's a bit of a specific situation but if anyone has experience with anything similar...?

I'm from the UK also so visa-exempt. (Common-law partner and daughter are Canadian citizens)

I don't really think this would be a problem, unless you put a lot of emphasis on your student status in your PR application. I would just say the truth, that you'd rather continue school as a PR but want to maintain your status in Canada while you wait for your application, and having a baby is a good excuse as any to want to take a semester off school.

Okay that's what I thought, thanks.

Has anyone does the opposite? My husband and I have an outland application that we submitted in April. He's come to Canada as a visitor, which expired on October 30th. He's been accepted as an international student at a school here. Anyone have any experience in having status changed to student visa while we wait for PR to come through? He won't start school until January so there is a chance PR will happen before then but maybe not. We reached the SA stage on June 17th but haven't anything else since. Luckily, the school he applied to is charging him canadian fees (I guess they thing he'll get PR anyway..
Anyway, just wondering if anything had any experience or thoughts on the subject.
Thanks!

It *will* expire this coming October 30th, I believe you mean? Not Oct 2014? ;)

I, American citizen, was in Canada as a visitor when I received my student visa (study permit). I had to go to the border to actually receive my visa to study. There was no way to do this without going through the border. You cannot go through border security at the airport unless you are *arriving* from an international flight. They don't let you in.

You should take steps to insure that your husband maintains status in Canada.

He can apply for a study permit. But during the wait for the study permit (mine took about 2.5 months, not including the CSQ for Quebec, which only took 1-2 weeks) he should maintain his status as a visitor, including applying for a visa extension (request to extend stay in Canada).

His study permit start date is most likely going to correspond to the start dates indicated in his acceptance letter from the school, so between Oct to Jan, he'll need a visa extension.

Couldn't you technically take a leave of absence from school and have the study permit remain valid? I would talk to the international student office at the school too.
