Hi Everyone,

this is my first time here, and right my family and I are applying for a study permit for my wife and a work permit for me through the IRCC portal. all of us already have visitor visas, however, we would like to know if it is necessary to include our child in the online application since we all have already visitor visas (V1/V2).

we appreciate it if one of you can help us with this

If your child is 4+ they would be applying for a study permit.

we appreciate it if one of you can help us with this

Thank you canuck for your answer,

My concern is regarding the process, what I understand is that, if one of the parents has a valid study permit the child will not need a study permit, we also found that he will require a study permit to be able to study in a school in Canada, he is 8, the information is quite confusing, this is what we found:

"if the child is with a parent who is a temporary resident and has a study or work permit the study permit is not required for the child"

"documents needed: Child’s passport or child listed on a parent’s passport. The child may have a visitor record. The parent has a study or work permit. It’s recommended that the child gets a study permit, even when one is not required"

so the questions are:

1. do we need to request the study permit for our child at the same time we request the study permit for my wife and the work permit for me through the IRCC portal?

2. can we request the study permit for my child once we have entered Canada?

this will definitively change the answers to the question that says: "Why is your family member visiting Canada?"

- if I select "study more than 6 months" the system is going to ask for the letter of acceptance
- if I select "visit / all other" the system is going to ask for the application for a visitor visa, but my son already has a visitor visa!

this is confusing I'd appreciate it if you can help me to understand what should I do

Although on some websites it still says TRVs are ok many VOs deny the TRV and tell parents to apply for a study permit. Some school boards require proof of a study permit for the child to attend public school for free which is why I would apply for a study permit to get the application started. You’d have to apply online while in Canada so best to get it started. For child of parent studying or working just indicate they will attend the local public school associated with your catchment area and that should be fine.
