Hi there!

I am currently a student who will be graduating from McGill at the end of the semester. I've held a part-time job as a cook during my studies and I am hoping to keep that job and apply for a PGWP to get experience for the CEC. I am also planning on going back to school once I've obtained this experience. Here are my questions:

1. How can I keep working at my current job between my study permit's expiry and my application for the PGWP. Do I have to submit my PGWP application the day I receive confirmation from McGill that I've graduated?

2. If I apply for my PGWP in May and work for 12 months, gaining enough experience, can I simultaneously apply for a study permit? For example, if I am working with my PGWP hoping to get 1 year of experience from June 2021 to June 2022, but apply for a study permit in March 2022, while my work experience be valid from March to June 2022 or will it be invalidated by the study permit application?

Thank you for the help!

Why would you want to go back to school as international student after obtaining 1 work experience in Canada,
instead you could apply for Permanent residency and then go back to school as domestic student?

Of course I am aware that I could do that. I wouldn't be asking the question I asked if I had not also considered that. I just don't want to wait another year before going back to school. I am asking if it would be possible for me to gain PR while in my first year of studies and finish the second year of my graduate degree as a domestic student.

I would advise you to call CIC,

I had a similar question about PR application and possibly starting school and I called them and got my answer.

  1. You should technically apply within 90 days of graduating or completing all requirements towards your degree. Then, once you've submitted the application you'll be on implied status (regarding work permit) and you can start counting your experience towards CEC from then onwards.
  2. You can apply for a Study Permit immediately after or ever before having applied for PR. If approved, you will have a valid work and study permit. YES you can keep both and one does not invalidate the other. However, if you plan to continue to study in McGill, you might hinder you ability to obtain PR via Express Entry. This because you must intend or at least pretend to intend to reside outside of QC once you become a PR. If you apply for a study permit for a QC institution you will have set a clear enough precedent to deny your application for not intending to settle out of Quebec. It will be very difficult to refute that. Hence, you should probably consider applying through the Government of QC if that's the case. If the institution where you want to pursue further studies is outside of the province then, that will actually help your application and provide evidence that you indeed intend to settle out of Quebec.
