Good evening everyone,

My wife and I have been married now for a year and a half and have been going back and forth on who's going to move where. We mutually agreed that it makes more sense for her to stay put and me to go there (she owns a condo, has horses, etc...). This, of course, has brought on some questions which I haven't found answers for yet.

There's no question that our intent is to file for family class sponsorship, however, looking at the estimated timelines, for me coming from the US, its looking like it'll take 35 months to process?!?! If I'm understanding that correctly, that's insane and we don't want to wait another almost three years to be together. In the interim, while that is being processed, is it possible to obtain a work or study permit to be there? I was considering going back to school here in the states as it is as I have kind of plateaued in my current career, but with the decision having recently been made for me to go there, it makes more sense to do my studies there rather than getting started here, then having to transfer or start over again there. At the very least, if not study right away, could I get a work permit so I can not only be with her, but be getting myself into the workforce up there.

Also, if anyone has any encouraging stories about moving from US to Canada or tricks to be together quicker, please share them, because this three year estimated wait sure was a punch to the gut. We're both 33 and don't want to waste more time when we want to be starting a family not to mention being lonely!

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Kyle

I think I actually just found the answer as it looks like someone pretty much posted the same question.

Still, any encouraging stories are fully welcomed!

Cheers

It's definitely not 35 months for US applicants. At one point, it was closer to 3-5 months, but now it's slowed down again, so 6-10 would be a better guess.

Assuming you apply outland, there is no work permit available. If your job qualifies, you might be able to get a work permit through NAFTA.
