I am an American citizen coming to Canada (BC) on a study permit for postgraduate studies, and have authorization to work in Canada on or off campus as part of my permit (20 hrs/week during session, full-time during breaks). I will be working as a teaching assistant (12 hrs/week) at the university, so earning minimal Canadian income. I also own a sole-member LLC in Colorado as a graphic designer and photographer. My husband is in the EE pool, is starting a 2-year Canadian job contract, and we should get a draw for PR application soon. My questions are as follows:
1. Since I am currently a temporary resident of Canada, can I maintain my sole-member LLC in the US and conduct business in the US?
2. Do I file a Canadian tax return as a temporary student resident, or do I file it all in the US as foreign earned income?
3. Can my US-based LLC conduct business in Canada? If so, do I need to register in Canada as a foreign entity, and are my hours restricted to those allowed under my study permit?
4. How will these considerations change once I gain PR?
Thanks for your advice.
