Student → Visitor → Student, is this possible?

A friend of mine is currently attending a language school, so they have a Study Permit currently.
It ends in July, but she wishes to stay longer to apply to a college in Ontario.

So what's the best course of action she can take?

Can she extend her stay as a Visitor, then apply to college, get a new Study Permit for the college?
