Hi all,

I am in serious need for advice. My wife is sponsoring me (already approved) for Permanent Residency and is a dual US Canadian citizen and I am a US citizen from Buffalo. She was born and grew up in the US but received citizenship through her mother by decent. She has family in both Toronto and Buffalo. We plan to live with her family after approval. The trouble is that the Pilot Processing Centre is asking for proof of her residency in Canada although she has never lived there. Also as far as we read a Canadian citizen can sponsor a spouse abroad as long as we demonstrate we plan to live there after approval. In the application package we provided letters from her family stating that we we planned to live with them after landing. What I don't get is wasn't she already checked as a sponsor since she's been approved? Also I don't get why they are asking for residency proof when she is a citizen and doesn't need any. The email from CIC said nothing about proving we plan to live there. Only her residency.

She has applied for her social insurance number a few months ago and I re-sent a copy of the SIN application and card, re-sent all the letters, a copy of her citizenship card, a copy of her sponsorship approval, and a copy of her email confirmation from jobs she's been applying to.

Thought? Please help!

CIC often just inserts a person's details into a form email that contains some info that is relevant and some that is not. That sounds like an email they would send to a PR sponsoring their spouse, as PRs must be living in Canada to sponsor.

Regardless, your response was good and should alleviate the VO's concerns.

I think I read something similar here before. They are asking for proofs of her intent to settle in Canada once you are granted your PR. You should be sure to send all the proofs you have of that. Job offers, house hunting, living with family, letters or emails between your spouse and you and family members in Canada about your intentions of moving there.

I might be totally off base with my response, but I think that is what I understand they are likely looking for. They likely understand she is a citizen and just want to ensure her intent to settle in Canada.
