Hi,

I'd like to know where/how people invest in stocks in Canada... is it through banks like TD or HSBC?

What other services (preferably online trading types) are available?

Thanks!

Most banks (not sure about HSBC) have discount and full-service (full fee) brokerages. There are also independent brokerage firms that will offer full-service accounts (if you want the advice, and are willing to pay for it).

International brokerages that use primarily the Internet to serve you are also worth considering. Dirt-cheap commissions and superior on-screen services make them attractive. For example, TD Ameritrade has an easy-to-use website, is headquartered in the USA I believe, but you can join from anywhere in the world.

Hi Toby,

Thanks a lot for the info.

Regarding TD AMERITRADE... residents from certain countries are restricted from opening an account, and one example is Japan where I live :(

Anyway,,, I asked around and found International Brokers which seems decent in terms of commissions and investment choices.

Regards!

Bizarre, about Ameritrade not allowing you to open an account.

If you mean interactive Brokers, yes, they have a good reputation. Their website is not as user friendly, but it can be managed.
