CANADA
Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
DO NOT COME TO CANADA OR COME TO CANADA IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A JOB, NOT CANADA, NO JOBS IN CANADA, CANADA IS EXPENSIVE, USA IS GREAT, CANADIAN EMPLOYERS DISCRIMINATE,CANADIANS ARE RUDE, GOVT OF CANADA IS CHEATING IMMIGRANTS ETC ETC

This is not the first and will not be the last time we have seen or will see these messages. As long as this forum is in existence we will have opinion and difference of opinion also.

For those you are not deterred by the above messages, and want to focus on ways to be successful in Canada, I would discuss some steps which can be helpful.

Immigration to any country is a major decision of life and certainly some major planning is required. After immigration to Canada unlike math, where 2+2 is always 4, unfortunately there are no such steps to follow which will bring good/same result for everyone. A bit of planning before and after landing can assist in early days of immigrants.

Now the issue is that we as a new immigrants have no say to change the system being followed in Canada but we can change our approach to be successful in Canada.

Most of us land in Canada and our 1st and foremost priority is to get a job to run day to day expense. This job can be survival job or a job in one's own occupation.

In this post I would be covering topics ranging from resume building, job hunting, interview preparation, survival jobs, common mistakes, co- op placement/ volunteer, kids education, renting etc.

I have a full time job and a family to take care. Resultant, I would be unable to finish this post in one go. I would be posting on various topics on frequent basis in this post. Hope this is going to help the landed immigrants and the hopeful immigrants.

In my opinion these are the steps- before and after landing

RESUME:
Canada has a different style of job resume. You can try to make your resume as per Canadian style before landing or after landing, once you have landed, search for the nearby neighborhood services (mostly free as funded by CIC) and request for improvements as per Canadian standards. It can take several visits to finally get it to Canadian standards.
Do not pay for drafting your resume, some job placement agencies may divert you to people who charge.
You may have to build up more than one resume also. If you are applying for a job which is just a starter job then cut short your job duties so that it matches to the requirement of job posting.
Prepare a forwarding letter also.
In the resume:-
1. Avoid describing marital status, age, name of your country/ city of education,
2. Write the name of the company/ organization where you worked, without the name of city/ country
3. The length of resume should not be more than 2 pages.
4. Do mention the achievements while mentioning the job duties, the focus be that while performing the job duties
5. On an average an HR of a busy company have less than 2 minutes to go through a new resume, so sum up your experience and achievements in the beginning of resume, so that the HR finds resume attractive and keeping reading it more to short list it.

ONCE YOUR RESUME IS READY:
1. Do not send your resume in 100's or 1000's, everywhere and anywhere. Your ID would be blocked by the Hiring Managers. It is not like that the more you apply the more you have chance to get job.
2. See the jobs and the duties and then if the job duties are matching as per your work, you should apply. Do not commit anything about the salary expectation.
3. If you are in XX City, do not apply all over Canada, apply in nearby locations only.
4. See if in the job posting the requirement of education is High School, do not state in resume that you are Masters. You would be treated overqualified. For a job neither under qualified are hired nor overqualified are hired.
5. I would say send your resume for few jobs and then look for response. If you get no response, do reconsider the redrafting of resume again before applying again.
6. As stated above do make more than one resume as per requirement of job apply by changing the job duties and achievements.
7. Maintain a record where ever you sent the resume. Do not upload the resume on all the job sites at the same time. After changes you would not be able to upload on same site again.
8. Canada has some recruitment agencies which specializes in specific occupation. Find about them and do visit them with your resume( Canadian standard). They can get you hired on contract basis.

In my next post I will discuss about the interview preparations.
