As long as your RTD is Valid and you don't become Permanent Resident of other country.
4 ways to loose your protected status,
1. Become Permanent Resident/Citizen from other Country
2. Become Canadian Citizen
3. Cessation by either Re-availment or Misrep
4. Voluntary Withdrawing your status
As long as above does not apply, and your RTD remains valid, then your Protected Status is indefinitely.
Most other countries limit how long you can stay abroad on your RTD. If you are trying to sponsor a spouse or children you need to show that you can support them so it is best to be setting up a life in Canada in order to be ready to support them when they arrive. If you are still waiting for PR you must either be in Canada or return to Canada to get PR.
