Hi everyone. I am putting the final touches on my forms to send into CIC. I will be applying for PR through the outland method and am currently living in Canada on a IEC permit until May, 2017. My common-law will be sponsoring me and we have read that he needs to complete a severance of common-law for his previous relationship.

My question is, can any notary of public witness this stat dec? I took it into my nearest AMA (they offer free notary services) and she said that they can only notarize documents staying within Alberta, Canada. So does this mean that CIC would not accept it as formally notarized? I'm not really sure if this would matter as we would be getting it notarized in our home province of Alberta but i'm interested to hear what you all think!

Thanks!

Both my wife and I think that's kinda strange they wouldn't notarize it for you. We're in Alberta, and we've gone to a notary or Commissioner of Oaths at an attorney's office for those kinds of documents. But AMA should have notarized it for you without concern where it was going.

Which AMA office did you go to?

It was the AMA in South Red Deer. The woman was unsure which then made me unsure. I may try taking it back there again. My partner works away a lot so i'll have to wait another 10 days now until he is back.

I thought it was a little strange as well.
