I just started work in Canada (closed work permit). I flew in from the US (my company in the US transferred me to Canada). I'd like to visit family in India who I haven't seen in 4 years. I was thinking of working from India remotely for 1-2 months. Can I do this? For how long am I allowed to do this - 6 months? I say 6 months because after that I come a Resident Indian as per Indian laws.

Nothing to do with Canadian immigration or laws if you work remotely. Your work doesn’t count as Canadian experience if you are wanting PR.

I do not want a Canadian PR at all. I intend to return to the US in a few months. I'm on a TRV with a Work Permit so I was wondering if there's any restrictions on that. I'd be on my Canadian payroll while working remotely.

No issue because you aren’t in Canada.

As said above, no issue from a Canadian immigration perspective. Make sure you get approval from your company to do this.

You will likely negate any health coverage you’ve applied for so you’ll need to start from scratch when return. There are provincial residency requirements that must be met to qualify for health coverage even if you have a valid health card. Depending on your ties to Canada you may become a non-resident. Will you have a home in Canada while in India? Your employer may prefer to pay you in India if you are not living in Canada since that will save them a lot of money.

Got it. I won't have any home in Canada while working remotely in India. They're saving a lot paying me in CAD actually

So there’s a good chance that you wouldn’t be a resident for tax purposes if you leave Canada especially for 6 months. Company can save even more if you aren’t living in Canada and working remotely. Really up to your company whether they will allow you to work remotely from India and still pay you as if in Canada.

Yep, I'll go for two months initially and see if they'd be willing to extend that as long as I can perform w/o issues at my current job. Or else I return :/ and fly to the US from Canada
