Spouse work permit validity after student's graduation

My situation is like this:
My spouse is a student and I am working fulltime on open work permit which is issued on his student visa. But we got to know that when he graduates (which will be in few months) I can no longer work bcos my work permit is invalid when he is no longer a student. So I have to stop working and wait for him to get post grad work permit. And we got to know I cant apply for my work permit unless he gets a post doc position which is what he is planning to apply for. Have any of you faced similar situation? And my question is can I apply for employment insurance for the time I am waiting to get my work permit and start working? If I can, on what category do I fall in, bcos I dont fall in any of their std categories.(parental, sick benefit etc)

I am in the same situation.

Graduated in February but my spouse's work permit is valid until the end of 2015. I got PGWP and have a job with NOC B. Do we need to renew the spouse's work permit or it is valid until the end of it's expiry date (end of 2015)?
