Hi I am a canadian ctizen residing in india with my spouse. I had applied for his sponsorship about two years ago and now he has received the PR Visa which epxpires at two months, but now we have a son who is 6 months old. He doesnt have a passport. How do we go about now since we only have a very short time before the visa expires?

how did you receive your canadian citizenship? (ie: were you born in canada, received citizenship through parents or did you immigrate to canada and apply to be a citizen?)

depending on how you received your canadian citizenship, the child may be a canadian citizen as well. if that's the case, then there is no need to add him to the application. All that would be necessary to do is apply for the child's certificate of citizenship so he can get a canadian passport.

thnks

iam a naturalized citizen. we don't have that much time. processing for canadian citizenship certificate takes around 7 months.
my hubby's visa expires in two months so we have to be in canada before that. but my son has no travel documents.

You could have your husband fly to the nearest Canadian city, land as a PR and catch the very next flight back to India. Then when the baby's paperwork is done, you can all come to Canada together.

You have several options.

CIC may be able to fast-track your son's citizenship certificate. I recall some people have gotten it in a month or so after they submit a copy of the PR visa and CoPR to CIC as proof of urgent travel. See http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/urgent-proof.asp for details.

However, even if you don't get it in time, you can still travel with either a temporary passport (given to children under 2 who are traveling back to Canada) which normally would be processed by the Embassy at the same time that you turn in the citizenship certificate documents.

If for some reason the temporary passport won't work, ask them for a facilitation visa on his Indian passport (I assume he has one having been born in India, even though India doesn't allow dual citizenship, since he hasn't availed himself of his Canadian citizenship). A facilitation visa is a visa for Canadians that is placed in another passport they hold allowing them to travel to Canada in certain situations (incl. dual nationals traveling to Canada for the first time, children who go through citizenship adoption process overseas and where their country of birth only allows them to leave on that country's national passport). Take a look at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/visa/types/facilitation.asp for details.

ok thnks

ill submit the citizenship certificate form plus passport form. there is no separate form for temporary passport right?
do i need to submit any extra documents for temporary passport? we are including the proof of urgency-photocopy of the PR visa
the citizenship certificate form asks for supplementry ids of both parents. what are the supplementry ids required. because we are already sending in my original passport plus citizenship certificate. and the photocopy of my spouse passport and voter id card. so what else do we need to send?

Talk with consular affairs at the Canadian Embassy or Consulate you would deliver (or mail) the documents to so that they can advise you what forms they will ask for. At a minimum they'll ask for PPTC116 and PPTC445 (while they are available online, they say you should request them from consular services) and can get a temporary passport in 20 days.

My child is born in India and does not have proof of Canadian citizenship yet. How can I get a passport for his/her travel?

Proof of Canadian citizenship is required to support each passport application. If your child was born in Indiaand you have not yet applied for his/her Canadian citizenship certificate, you will need to do that before submitting a passport application. If possible, you should consider deferring all travel plans until the certificate is received from the processing centre in Canada. For citizenship cards, this can be a lengthy process and we urge you to submit the application as soon as possible after the birth of your child.

Following submission of the citizenship application, if travel plans cannot be deferred, you may submit a fully completed passport application along with all supporting documentation as well as your child's proof of travel, such as a confirmed and paid itinerary or an airline ticket, to assess the case. As your child does not have citizenship documents, you will need to submit the original proof of Canadian citizenship from one of the parents, the original foreign birth certificate showing both parents' names, and the receipt confirming submission of the citizenship application. Our passport examiners will assess your case and determine the necessity of issuing a limited validity passport to meet your child’s travel needs. If the Canadian parent and the child are born outsideCanada [sic], then the completed form PPTC445 (Confirmation of Parents’ Canadian Citizenship History for a Child Born Abroad) is also required. A PPTC116 form must be completed by the applying parent.

Please note that a Limited Validity Passport can only be issued to children below two (2) years of age who have no Declaratory Evidence of Citizenship.
