Hello everyone,

I’m currently living in Quebec, but I plan to apply for permanent residence through spousal sponsorship (my wife is a Canadian citizen).

We’re expecting our first child in March 2026, and after the baby’s birth, I plan to move to Ottawa in July 2026 to live close to my wife’s family and raise our child there. I also work online (remotely), so I can easily relocate anywhere in Canada.

I’ve read that it might be possible to apply now for PR via Ontario even if I currently live in Quebec, as long as I can clearly show my genuine intention to settle in Ontario.

Could anyone confirm if this is true or share their experience with a similar situation?
Is it safe to apply now while living in Quebec, if I clearly explain my plan and provide evidence (job flexibility, family support, invitation letter, etc.)?

Any guidance or personal experience would be really appreciated.

Thank you!

So your spouse is moving too as she would need to be an Ontario resident (tax, rental, OHIP) etc. to sponsor you outside Quebec.

So once she has established residency in Ontario then apply. OHIP, driver's license, CRA (taxes). Show rental lease or home ownership. Same for you.
My Question is, Can I start the application now while am in Quebec , with an explanation letter that I am moving to Ontario next June?

No. The sponsor has to be living in Ontario, not you. You cannot say that "she promises to live in Ontario." She is the one sponsoring you so once she is a resident of Ontario then apply.

Hello everyone. I would really appreciate some insights on this matter.
So, we applied for inland common-law/spouse sponsorship in Quebec last October and have already completed biometrics and eligibility (i.e. the CSQ). Something has come up, and we now need to move to Ontario. I assume we have to notify IRCC about the change of province.

I have two questions:
  1. Should we submit all of our documents (letter of explanation, new address, etc.) via webform?
  2. Will moving from Quebec to Ontario reset our eligibility and place us back at the beginning of the processing queue, even though we’ve already been waiting for over a year? In other words, will we have to wait another two years, or will our application continue processing—possibly faster—under Ontario?
