Hi guys, just a quick enquiry.
My partner and I have been in a relationship for over a year. Not currently living together. Ina few months she will be away travelling for around 6 months in which I will join for a month before we come back. When we arrive back we will be in a living together for around 7-8 months before my work visa expires, which would account upto 2 years and 4 months in a relationship in total. Would anybody know the best way for us to go forward? I know you have to be living with your partner for 12 months at least for a common law and a conjugal is for partners who can't marry/ live together because of law restrictions. Any help is appreciated, thank you.

You would be better off posting in the Family Sponsorship section of the forum.

To answer your question, in order for the Canadian to sponsor the non-Canadian, you do need to either be married or common law. And yes, common law requires you to live together continuously for at least one full year. You don't fit the criteria for conjugal.

So you could get married. Or you could change your status to visitor at the end of your work permit to remain in Canada longer and become common law.
