Hello all,

Haven't been here for a while.
My wife and her son arrived in Canada from the Philippines in November 2014, almost 2 years now! (Seems like yesterday we were sweating through all the peaks & valleys of the application procedure. Has it gotten any better/faster! (I doubt it, right.)

Anyway, looking for expert (I know there are so many here!) input regarding sponsorship of my wife's Filipina relatives. She has no immediate kin, but there is (1) an aunt currently in the Philippines, and (2) a cousin currently in Taiwan. Different situations, but both interested in coming to Canada. For starters are these kind of relations eligible for sponsorship? In the latter case, could the cousin possibly come to Canada as a visitor and apply for PR here with/without sponsorship?

Thanks in advance to all.

No - you cannot sponsor any of these relatives for PR. If they wish to become permanent residents of Canada, they will have to qualify on their own through one of Canada's economic immigration streams.

Thanks for the quick response. Too bad it wasnt more favourable to our plans. My wife has met other Filipinas here who came on visitor visas, then applied for PR while here. Does that seem legit?

Thanks again!

Being here on a visitor visa doesn't give you any advantages when it comes to applying for PR. The criteria required to qualify is the same regardless of whether you are outside of Canada or inside Canada. So it's certainly possible - but being in Canada won't give them any advantages - they need to qualify just like anyone else. They will need to research Canada's economic immigration streams to see if they qualify to apply and to understand what they need to prepare (e.g. language test, education credential evaluation, employer experience letters). They can find information about Canada's immigration programs here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/apply.asp

Thanks again. Yes, I have visited some of the govt web sites, and the laws are there. What I have been surprised to find since being back in Canada & meeting more immigrants than I ever thought I would, is that there are some interesting parallel universes out there / loopholes that have been craftily exploited. Not saying it's the way I would want to play it but interesting how certain growing voting blocks (Indo-CDNs for example) can & do get things done their way while "old stock" CDNs either don't know or don't care about it.
