Job Offer........
Pre-Assessed..
Dear Friends,

I am on a Canadian PR having landed in Feb 2014 (5+ months), and have a job since just the past 2 months. I want to sponsor my parents who are US Citizens but live in India. I have read most of the documentation and also read a lot of the discussions on this forum. However just to clarify a few doubts, I am writing here, and will really appreciate someone helping me out.

1. Since they are aged 81 and 74 respectively, and are US Citizens, would CIC accept their application since they don't even need a visa to come stay in Canada. However, to facilitate health benefits for them, I want to apply for their Canadian PR.
2. If they apply from the US, can they stay in india while their application is being processed?
3. Would it be better to have them in Canada and then apply for their PR while they are here in Canada?
4. Can I sponsor my parents? I believe I cannot since, I only have 2 months of Canadian Income to show. Haven't filed a single income tax return.
5. Do I have to show 3 years consecutive income in Canada?

This is just the start, and I understand that currently they are not accepting applications since they have completed their quota of 5000 for this year.

I will appreciate any guidance or pointing me in the right direction for more research and understanding.

Thanks and Best Regards

1. Yes - you can sponsor them. Keep in mind that they will both have to pass a medical to demonstrate they won't be a burden to Canada's health care system.
2. Yes.
3. It won't speed things up - if that's what you're asking.
4. No - you can't at this time.
5. Yes - you need to show three consecutive years of income that meet the low income cut off to sponsor and this proof must be provided in the form of income tax returns. So you are probably still 4 years away from being in a position to sponsor them.

Hi Scylla,

Thank you so much for clarifying my doubts. So as I understand, I cannot sponsor them till atleast 2017 returns are filed and accepted. And on the health front, ofcourse, since they are so old, they will definitely be dependent on the Canadian Health Care...so there again it could bomb, especially if I am filing sometime in 2017+..

But thanks again, and I may bother you again sometime...hope you don't mind..

Best Regards

Unfortunately it will most likely be even longer than that. Since you are only working 1/2 the year in 2014, I assume you won't meet the 2014 parents LICO for 3 people, of around $47K income.

So assuming you meet LICO requirements in 2015, 2016 and 2017... that means you would first be able to apply in January 2019 (following current rules) since you wouldn't have 2017 NOA from CRA in time for January 2018.

A way to speed this up, is if you happen to marry or become common-law with a Canadian or PR here that has been making Canadian income, they can be co-sponsor and use their income to qualify.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the clarification...it does make sense...so I will have to wait for atleast 3 years at a minimum...:( Regarding your other suggestion, that may not be possible, since I immigrated with my family, so am married with kids....don't think the government may find that appealing...:)

But thanks once more..;

Best Regards
