Hi,
i am new to all this and have no clue where to start, Firstly i am on ODSP and my Boyfriend is American, He has been living with me for 2 years im not sure if it would be considered illegal as he hasn't had an income. He has gone back to the states twice for a week or two but my question is how would i go about sponsoring him to be able to work here and get OHIP? We have 1 child together and another on the way.... if i was to sponsor him does ODSP pay for the fees? or do we? would i need a lawyer? how long does it usually take someone on ODSP to get an approval... and as far as the health check up for him when would that happen... please help

You should be posting your questions to the Family Sponsorship section of the forum. However I'll help with a few questions now

- Yes, you can sponsor him while on ODSP
- He is in Canada illegally if he has been here for more than six months without leaving and without applying to extend his stay in Canada.
- If you want to sponsor him then you have to pay the fees. ODSP will not pay them. Expect it to cost around $1500 once you factor in the application fees, medical and FBI certificate fees.
- No, you don't need a lawyer.
- You should complete the medical before you submit the application.
- It's faster if you apply using the outland method (should take less than a year). If you apply outland, your boyfriend will be able to work and qualify for OHIP once the entire application process has been complete and his application has been approved. You can also apply inland. If you apply inland, the processing time will be closer to three years and he won't have OHIP coverage for around a year and a half after the application is submitted. If he's here illegall, then he should qualify for a work permit approximately a year and a half after the application is submitted. If he's here legally, he may qualify for a work permit after four months.
