I was wondering about sponsoring a person who is disabled. My current SO can't work and is on disability in the US. What does that mean? Can I sponsor her to come to Canada or would it be difficult? I think I saw something that said she has to be financially independent or will need to rely on me for 3 years. Would that be true in her case or would she be allowed to apply for disability here? I'm just looking for options. Thanks.

You can sponsor her. You will be required to sign an undertaking to provide for her for 3 years from the date of landing; this basically means that if she claims any welfare in that time, you will have to pay it back; I would assume that only applies to regular welfare and not disability but not sure. While there is no minimum income requirement, you will need to show that you can support yourselves in Canada without welfare. Whether they will factor in the possibility of her claiming disability when deciding if you have good enough finances, I don't know.

Your SO would also need to be commonlaw (12 month cohabitation) or your wife to be sponsored.
