I am sponsoring my american wife inland and today i called in to see where her Work Permit is (we are 10 months into the process) apparently because they mailed the application back to us once in the beginning for a mistake this took her out of status. Meaning instead of getting her work permit in June she will now get it after the step that determines if i'm an eligible sponsor. This took me by surprise, why would my eligibility to sponsor be left to near the end of the process and after a few thousand dollars have been invested into the process. I;m in the Canada Military making 50k+ a year and no criminal record BUT within the last 5ish years i have been on social assistance. Should i be worried about my eligibility to sponsor my wife ?

A few things to unpack here, it is true that if she was out of status once it was returned she won't get the OWP until much later in the process. Eligibility to sponsor comes right in the beginning for outland applications, right near the end for inland. This is nothing new.

You cannot sponsor if you are receiving social assistance - sounds like you are working though?

I was on Social Assistance in the past but for the past 3 years ive been employed by the canadian armed forces.

As long as you were not receiving it when you applied you should be fine assumed you've been discharged from the social assistance system.

The last time i received a payment was sometime in 2015 i believe, how could i go about confirming ive been purged from their system ?
