Hi
I am a Canadian citizen. My partner who lives in Turkey was convicted of drug possession (Hash and recreational pills- ecstasy) in September 2018. He received a suspended sentence- of 1 year and 8 months jail time but as long as he does not commit another crime in the next 5 years, he will not have to serve the time.

I am wondering if I can sponsor him with this criminal record and when can I submit the application? Must I wait a certain time lapse.

Thank you

If it had only been Hash it might have been fine, because of the new legal situation in Canada.

Ecstasy is another matter though...

He will have to apply for rehabilitation.

He cannot do this before 5 years after his sentence (including probation) have passed.

As said above, he will need to successfully apply for rehabilitation before you will be able to sponsor him to Canada. However he cannot apply for rehabilitation until five years have passed from the time the suspended sentence has been completed. So you are looking at sometime in 2025 before he will qualify to apply for rehabilitation and before you will be able to sponsor him to come to Canada.
