STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I am writing to your High Commission to apply for a study permit for a period of 36 months to enable me to pursue a Masters in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) course in University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
In this age of technological transformation, medical community has excelled in fabricating everything from a tiny pacemaker to an artificial heart, yet we are still unaware of the mechanisms which causes cardiac arrest, which is a leading cause of death in majority of the developing nations. It is my unchanging aspiration to probe and research the inner workings of cells and molecules involved in functional and dysfunctional state of the heart. I am highly motivated to find that gradually I am getting closer and closer to the point of realizing this aspiration of mine.
After securing 13th position in an all India entrance test (DY PATIL AICET-2006), I was accepted in D.Y. Patil Institute for pursuing bachelors in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. During my undergraduate studies, with perseverance and efficacious learning strategies, I managed to be in the top ranking students in my class in terms of scholastic aptitude, with especially outstanding performance in my subjects of speciality (for e.g. Biochemistry). Although I received a plethora of information during my undergraduate studies, I wanted to pursue a field where I could apply this knowledge.
In July of 2010, I joined as a master’s student in Manipal University (School Of Regenerative Medicine, SORM). Here, I not only received guidance and help from my professors for future studies, but, I learnt how to apply the expertise I acquired for actual experimentation and analysis. I received my MSc. in regenerative medicine in Feb 2014.
India, being a developing country faces many of the diseases which affect developed nations also, heart attack being the top on the list. I found that there was an innate urge to explore and investigate molecular mechanism which causes the heart to dysfunction completely. Dr. Kouichi Hasegawa a leading expert on stem cells from University of Kyoto (Japan), is a visiting faculty in the institute of stem cell and regenerative medicine (inStem) which is a part of National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) located at south of India. He was impressed by my enthusiasm and motivation to learn, soon I was appointed as a junior research fellow for a cardiovascular project in the month of Jan’2013. My research under the supervision of Dr. Hasegawa was to study and analyse the changes which takes place inside heart due to extreme physical activities, and how this could be one of the causes of cardiac arrest. During my one year of research I found out that extreme physical activities forces the heart tissues to adapt and modify itself in a way which could be mal-adaptive after a point.
As this was a novel study, I wanted to pursue a doctorate in the particular area of research, and Dr. Hasegawa was unable to help me in this case as he was a visiting faculty in the institute and his term was about to get over, in addition to this he had no funds to sponsor my PhD in his lab in Japan.
While I was looking for a reputed university to apply for a PhD program, I joined as a part time Scientist in a corporate sector from Feb-Aug 2014 to pay for my bills and living expenses.
In Sept. 2014, with the help of Dr. Hasegawa, I found out that Dr. John Dawson’s lab in University of Guelph (Canada) is doing some ground breaking research on heart disorders. After much discussion, Dr. Dawson agreed to take me in as a PhD student and at the same time provide funds and assistance during my study and stay in Canada. However, after reviewing my application, the graduate committee informed me that my master’s grades from my home country are not up to the mark when compared to the grades required for a Canadian PhD program, and that I would have to enter the university as a master’s student. However, depending upon my performance in master’s program, I would be transferred to a PhD program after successfully passing a qualifying exam. I have accepted the offer letter provided by University of Guelph and received the letter of acceptance with guaranteed funding letter which covers my tuition fees as well as living expenses during my study and stay in Canada.
Upon completion of my studies in Canada, I plan to return to India without hesitation to put all the principles and knowledge I obtained into practice. Although, there are numerous pharmaceutical companies and hospitals in India which work towards providing a cure and care for cardiac disorder, there are very few research organizations which work on how the disorder originates in the first place. I wish to join a research lab in my home country and continue my post-doctoral study, wherein I will share my acquired knowledge and skills with young investigators and researchers who are willing to devote themselves to the study of cardiovascular abnormalities. Last but not the least, I want to share every step of my success with my dear parents who have been a part of every failure and success in my life.
Respected officers, if I am fortunate enough to get the permission to study in Canada, which I believe is a crucial step to achieve my goal, I will treasure this opportunity and constantly strive to improve myself.

Thank you.

It is good. It covers the points which they require, that is, 1. why Canadian University, 2. whether you will return to your country after studies, 3. what are your prospects of employment in your country after the studies. I believe you SOP is good.
