I have some questions...I would love if anyone can give me some answers.

1. If you leave your child behind when immigrating but put them on your papers to file them a year and a half after you file your own...is that a problem with immigration? Can you still file them seperatly at a different time as long as they are on your papers? Will it take longer to file them if you do that? Basically the situation is...my stepdaughter is going to come abroad. Her mother is filing to go alone to another and refuses to take the child with her and has asked to have another year and a half before we start filing the three year old. So we are filing my husbands papers now...and then in a year and a half the childs. Will this present any problems?

2. If you have a child still in your home country and you immigrate...can you go back and visit them before your a citizen? How long till you can travel back and forth and is it true that if you do travel...the time your gone has to be added to how much longer you have till you can get your permanent citizenship?

3. My parents seem to have convinced themselves that my husband who is Jamaican, has a clean record and nothing to keep him from being sponsered...can easily get his papers denied. They believe this because we once tried for a visitor visa and it got denied. This isn't like visitor visa's correct..to get denied there has to be a reason you cannot enter the other country to live..correct?

4. How long till you can work when you arrive in Canada?

1. The child must be included in his paperwork and have a medical exam done at the time he files his papers in order to retain the right to be sponsored at a later date.

2. I believe that once you land as a permanent resident, you have the right to travel for short trips. However, the permanent resident card is required for re-entry into Canada, and it takes some time for that to be sent to you. The exact residency requirement I am not sure about...maybe someone else knows about that better than me?!

3. My husband is Nigerian, so the same barriers are there as well. Make sure the proof of your relationship is good and give them more than they need. E-mails, phone records, pictures...give them as much proof of your genuine relationship as you can. The previous denial may make it look like he is bent on being a Canadian, so do not give them cause to think that way.

4. Once he lands in Canada, he is able to look for work right away (assuming you are applying outland and he is "landing" as a permanent resident on arrival).

You will get your answers from this older discussion about how to maintain your residency status while outside Canada:
