No. Currently, evaluation of your degree is only a recommendation by CIC and not mandatory...That is why I said you can have ur degree assessed whille you application is being processed.

Hello Mandie
You know I applied on 9th May but didn't do the evaluation of my degree. So if I do now is it ok? Will I get any advantage of that?

Thanks ;)

Friends i have no degree in SOCIAL WORK ... i am an IT guy with IT education but have got part time experience and then Full time experience in an NGO as a social worker ... do u think i should apply as a SOCIAL WORKER.

Experience as SOCIAL worker was gained in last 10 years ... do you think i should go for it and choose 4152 NOC ... as 0213 is not in new NOC list ?

Hmmmm....this issue of experience vs education/qualification keeps coming! One thing is for SURE though....the most important thing to consider is at least 1 year experience within the last 10 yrs of some or all duties of a social worker (under whatever job title, not necessarily 'social worker') listed under the Ministerial Instructions. The duties (pertaining to current MI) are:
Social workers perform some or all of the following duties:
•Interview clients individually, in families, or in groups, to assess their situation and problems and determine the types of services required
•Provide counsel and therapy to assist clients in developing skills to deal with and resolve their social and personal problems
•Plan programs of assistance for clients including referral to agencies that provide financial assistance, legal aid, housing, medical treatment and other services
•Investigate cases of child abuse or neglect and take authorized protective action when necessary
•Serve as members on interdisciplinary teams of professionals working with client groups
•Act as advocates for client groups in the community, lobby for solutions to problems directly affecting client groups and develop prevention and intervention programs to meet community needs
•Develop or advise on social policy legislation, conduct social research and assist in community development
•Provide mediation services and psychosocial assessments
•Evaluate the effectiveness of counselling and social programs
•May provide public education and consultation to professionals or groups regarding counselling services, issues and methods
•May supervise other social workers.
•Social workers may specialize in fields of practice such as child welfare, family services, corrections, gerontology or addictions.

Yes, if you have a social work degree from any university outside Canada, CASW will assess it against the Canadian degree. Evaluating your credentials increases your job prospects.I don't think you would need to retrain once CASW certifies that your degree is equivalent to that of Canadian degree. For example, I did MA Social Work outside Canada and CASW certified that it is equivalent to Canadian MA. So you can have ur degree assessed while you go through the immigration process. Hope this helps. Mandie

i think the best time to evaluate my certification is when my status whould be "in process" :D

You are welcome to the Social Work family! You have been added to 2011 Tracker. If you observe the tracker, you will find out that the average days for PER is 35-45 days for post Feb applicants. However this has changed drastically for Mid May onwards and people have gone 50 days without any info...but rest assured, CIC will contact us in full swing. Patience, patience, patience...gotta have loads of it! Good luck!
