My son was born in Colombia almost 1 year ago and I have been with his mom for 3 years. In fact, we have had an apartment together for 2 years. I have been told that it will take up to 18 months to get my son and his mom into the country....Yet if I was Ukrainian, Syrian or Afghani the process is much easier and streamlined! How the hell is that possible?? There should be a much easier process for me to get my son his citizenship! We want to live here in Canada! Any help would be much appreciated but I am not holding out any hope!

Your son can come immediately on a temp passport as previously suggested. Have you applied for one yet?
His mother would either need to obtain a TRV and/or go through spousal sponsorship which is a longer process. Has she tried applying for a TRV yet?
There are special paths for war torn regions for obvious reasons.
Have you already started the process you were given guidance on almost a year ago ?

The majority of applicants from Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine have slow processing as well. In terms of Ukraine applicants are being processed for a work permit and not PR or recognition of citizenship and it is an emergency situation where people have been displaced from a war zone. If people are applying for PR they will face similar processing times. In terms of Syria processing was only fast for a specific effort and after that processing returned to more normal timelines. Same things for Afghanistan and many were evacuated to a 3rd country while their PR applications were processed or have arrived in Canada and may be still undergoing processing while living in limbo. There were many who arrived in Canada from Afghanistan without any status and had to wait for months to have their PR processed. There remains many families who are either in Pakistan or Afghanistan (often in hiding) that are still waiting for PR. Normal Processing from Afghanistan was always quite long but given the lack of establishment in the country processing will likely be longer than 18 months. Think we can all agree that nobody would like to have gone through being forced to leave your home due to the war in Ukraine and Syria especially having to leave with minimal notice and with nothing to return to. Also don’t think anyone wants to trade place with people in Afghanistan who have bounties on their head. Those who were lucky risked their lives trying to evacuate Afghanistan on very short notice and often wading through sewage and waiting days in the hot sun to make it into the airport and onto an evacuation flight. Many left with only a small backpack. Others have been killed, are in hiding at the moment or are waiting in 3rd countries waiting for approval in pretty desperate situations often dependent on charities to provide a place to stay. Many are in the 3rd country illegally and can’t work. Although waiting may be frustrating your family isn’t worrying about being executed, having a mortar kill them or destroy their home, aren’t living in a 3rd country waiting for approval from Canada in shelters often living with strangers, etc. We remain quite lucky compared to many others
No..I cannot get a passport UNTIL his birth is registered here in Canada. That is directly from the Embassy in Bogota.
Call the global consular services number at global affairs canada, contact your MP. That information is incorrect.
Which section / department of the embassy did you speak to? Call again, ask to speak to someone senior - that information is wrong. (Possible of course there was some misunderstanding)
Note though: the kid getting a citizenship certificate does not guarantee a visa aat the same time for the mother.
