Hii guys, I am leaving for Vancouver this december and I just want to clear my confusion regarding passport renewal/re-issue/extension etc.

So here's my case:
Passport validity left - 15 months
Visa issued for - 14 months
Course duration - 3.5 years

So now I need to get passport re-issued and then get visa extended till end of course.
So, What can i possibly do now to avoid any problem in future? Here are few troubling points::
Should i get it done in Canada or India? If in Canada, then::
1. Would they re-issue passport and shift my visa to new passport?
2. How long does it take and do i have to get it done in person or by mail? I'll be studying in British Columbia.
3. When applying for study visa extension, do i have to send both passports or just the new one?

I would be highly appreciate your input! :-)

I think u should do it in canada (because of fast service).....but not sure if u will be better off in india as u may get study permit for the duration of ur studies.
1. Would they re-issue passport and shift my visa to new passport?
once u renew ur passport u will have 2 passports and u always carry those two with u .....normally u can staple them together .....so when u get new passport ur visa will remain on the old passport and they wont move visa counterfoil to the new one...however ur visa on the old passport will be valid and can be used.
2. How long does it take and do i have to get it done in person or by mail? I'll be studying in British Columbia.
i think it takes one to two months not sure. when i did it in US it took 1 month and was by mail
3. When applying for study visa extension, do i have to send both passports or just the new one?
u need to send both passports.

Allright i will try to help you out on this one.

your course is 3.5 years and your visa is issued for 14 months because of your passport getting expired in 15 months. You do not need to worry at all once you are in Canada just before 3-4 months to expire you can renew your passport in Canada itself and get your new visa stamped on that one.

1. Yes in Canada the passport office of india will issue you a new passport and you can send your passport to Consulate General of Canada to issue you a visa.
2. I am not too sure about the time. You can enquire it from the offices there in Canada and you can do it by mail.
3. I am assuming you have to send them both the passports or the details of the old one.

Hope this helps a little.

+1... Incredible!! Thats a big relief for now. And one more thing, has anyone tried Canadavisa.com legal immigration services by Attorney David Cohen and team? I would most likely need legal guidance when I begin my course and I haven't yet seen any one else but them on the internet. And also how do they charge? Like hourly based or full job based?

P.S.
##Now I owe you 2 beers.
##I can't +1, it says "Sorry, you can't repeat a karma action without waiting 168 hours." I'll wait.
