SIN expiry while waiting for open work permit extension

My wife had applied for the extension of her spousal open work permit and the decision hasn't come yet. Meanwhile, her SIN is expiring soon. So, I have 2 questions:

1) Can or should she renew her SIN while waiting for the decision?
2) Do we generally renew SIN a few days before the expiry or do we need have to wait till its expiry to renew it?

She can continue working on the temporary SIN.
