Hello guys,
I applied under the express entry program and i anticipate i'll be selected soon (my score is 430). However, i have sickle cell anemia and i'm quite worried i may be medically inadmissible. I'm 30, a qualified accountant, i live on my own, i have a job and i'm doing quite well. My crises are quite mild, but i had one in January 2015. Before then, i had 2 in 2013. I don't remember how many i had in 2012.

Does anybody have any information, maybe from experience or from other peoples experiences on whether being a sickler will render me medically inadmissible?

Hope to hear from you guys ASAP.

This is not a issue. You can apply they only test contagious disease.

Thanks for responding @zstream, It's not the bit about being contagious that worries me, i'm afraid i may be assessed as "placing excessive demand on health and social services". Any thoughts?

It will depend on how much support your condition requires. They will probably work on the worst case scenario for the assessment.
Do you have any figures from your personal health history?

@zardoz, 2013 was one of my worst years with 2 hospitalizations. Cost me roughly about $1,000 altogether. Usually, management of sickle cell crises requires just hydration with IV drips and pain meds.

In that case, you may be fine. If however, there is a query about the matter from CIC, if you can show your expenditure, it may help.

that you are SS does not make you inadmissible, you just need to show how you have been managing it with your fund.We have seen people with HIV being issued visa. Wish you all the best

it depends on how much money it woutld take for your medical expenses in Canada.
I believe its around 6000$/year which is normally spent by the government for their people in Canada.
if your cost of medical expenses go beyond that point then that will be of concern. They usually look for a period of 10 years from the time you land in Canada that the candidate wouldn't be a burden on the health care system.. Hopefully your issue wouldn't make a huge nagative impact.

it's not true that they look for only contagious diseases.

Hello Nemile, I hope you get this replay. I am from Nigeria and unfortunately sickle cell patients. I am very interested in going over to Canada to study for masters, my only concern is how favourable is Canada for a sickler based on climate, healthcare and otherwise. How will it affect my finance and how can I cope. Since you live there I was hoping you can give me an incite

While studying you get private insurance coverage through an international student plan. You may want to look at how much coverage you receive. If your goal is to leverage your education to get PGWP and then PR you will have to assess how much treatment you receive for your sickle cell. If you have numerous attacks once you get to Canada that will make it much more difficult to pass the medical inadmissibility.
