Apologies if this is a common question. I have recently been given the green light from work to take a 6 month sabbatical during which time I hope to travel across the country. From what I understand I can be in the country for 6 motnhs, what is the view on leaving and returning during that 6 months?

Also, whilst I have requisite funds to support myself whilst I am there, what is the legal position of someone wanting to volunteer through something like helpx for short term volunteer work. I obviously do not want to be on the wrong side of any laws, but I was wondering how it would be categorized (as it is unpaid, only room/food offered in exchange)

any help or advice anyone has will be much appreciated

If you are receiving any remuneration for the volunteer work (even if it's just room and board) then you require a work permit. If you fail to obtain a work permit and volunteer as a visitor you will be working illegally.
