Thanks and good day,

The best way to move money is through a currency exchange broker. I use xe.com (based out of Victoria, BC). I could beat the rate you're mentioning (albeit only by a small amount) by walking in with cash to a currency broker here in Vancouver, so you're right that's not a very good exchange rate. I just checked my online account with xe.com and they offered a trade at 1531.39 for £1000 (assuming wire in and EFT out.)

If you are only transferring a modest amount of money, you could just bring it in cash (say up to £3000 or so) and if you plan on transferring more than that, you could transfer it to an account in Canada, or have them issue and mail you a draft so it would be there upon your arrival (assuming you have an address to use on the far side.) If you are going to do more than that, I'd suggest going to HSBC and having them convert it into a CAD bank draft payable to you if you don't want to do a wire transfer. HSBC does a remarkably good job of moving money between countries (I use them regularly as well, as I've found their exchange rates to be as good as I can get from XE and for me they are instantaneous, as I have accounts with them in both Canada and the US. I know the same thing can be done between the UK and Canada as well.)

RDK,

Perhaps you can ask one of these posters in this thread:

http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/shipping-company-relouk-anyone-have-any-experience-with-this-company-t95600.0.html

I don't know why captain Qorax doesn't like to ship things from home country to Canada, but I personally think there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, my shipping experience (from China to Canada) was good.

For moving money, use HSBC premier. You can open a british pound currency account at HSBC Canada.

I wouldn't bring the big electric appliances (such as washer and fridge) to Canada. The voltage in Canada is 110V, whereas most of Asia 220V. If sofa is made of good leather, I would bring to Canada. I would definite bring any utensils which cannot be buy here and take my clothes with me.

I can recommend you to chek these international shipping companies: containervessel.org because in most cases the most expensive are the most sure companies, so make your best choise and be carefull. Good luck in searching.
