Sending docs voluntarily: why send by post AND email?

I've seen a few people voluntarily sending proof of relationship to their visa offices. Is it better to send by post or by email/CSE? Or is it the same thing so long as they receive it?

Also, why do some people send the same documents both by email AND by post? Is there a specific reason for doing this? I thought the CIC didn't want us sending duplicate documents.

We sent them via mail and email just so we knew we got them.
