Second masters

Currently, I am waiting for my Master’s thesis defense but due to the covid pandemic, I am in kind of a dilemma whether I would be able to finish it or not. My master’s grade is not up to the mark..it is quite unsatisfactory. That is why I want to pursue a second master's in Canada to get myself enough competent for Ph.D.On a different note, my sister-in-law is a permanent resident in Canada. I would like to know that

1. Will these two issues affect my SP visa and also my husband’s OWP visa?

2. If I complete my master’s after getting an offer letter, shall I disclose it in my SOP?

Any kind of suggestions would be highly appreciated.

1. It depends. You need to justify the reason why you need another Masters degree, and then convince VO that you will be excel in the program seeing as your current record is unsatisfactory. Your SIL being a PR in Canada should not be a problem as long as you can afford your tuiton and living expenses without relying on her. If she will be your sponsor, then she needs to show adequate means.

2. Yes you should, as indicate in point 1 above. Even if you don't complete it prior to applying, you should still disclose in your SOP and your application, as you will need to provide full academic records now and in all future applications e.g. for PR.

Thank you so much for your reply. If I go for an MEng program (course-based) after completing a part-time MSC (thesis-based) with a low GPA, will it increase my visa rejection possibility? Should I consider only the thesis-based program in that case?

Similar situation to you, I was doing an MSc. (part-time) and applied to do an MEng program in Canada. I applied while writing my thesis and prior to being awarded my degree. I did not encounter any problems being accepted into the program and obtaining a study permit. However, I did complete the MSc. before enrolling in the MEng.

That being said, the two degrees were unrelated (Financial Mgmt and Software Eng). It may be different if you are planning to do the same type of program (for ex. MSc. Chem Eng to then do a MEng. Chem Eng).

Thank you for your reply.In my case, i am currently doing my MSc in Civil Engineering and planning to go for MEng in Civil engg program. So the case is pretty much the same you mentioned at the last part of your reply. It would be a big help for me if anyone could answer that part!
