School Admission for kids on Study permit

Hi,

I am moving to pursue MBA course from BC in Jan 2014 and my family will accompany me. I will be on study visa myself.

My kids (age 4 and 7) would join me on a visitor visa initially and would like to apply for their study permit, if they are able to adjust.

- Can International students on a study permit can take admissions into district schools, or they can only attend private schools (that are super expensive).

- If my kids can join district schools, do we need to pay any fees (since I am myself on a study visa and still not on PR).

Also, I have heard that the sessions starts in Sept and the admissions are done in Jan and Feb every year.
They are already in school in Delhi and will join me after their session ends in March.
- Will I be able to secure a seat in a good school, since we will be there only in April.
Do I need to do something for that?

Your children can attend district schools - however they will have to pay an annual tuition fee since they are foreign students. I would budget $13K per child per year.

Hi,

You would suggest 13k for 4+ as well as for 7+ also.

As I understand that 4+ will have another 2 years to go to Grade 1.

I would suggest $13K for the seven year old.

If you want the four year old to attend school, then I would suggest $13K for a full day junior kindergarten program (some areas are starting to put full day programs in place) or $7K for half day. Alternatively you can keep the four year old out of school until grade 1.

Also, I just called up one of the District Schools in BC, where they informed me that there is no tuition fees for international students on Student Permit.

So I am confused as the school coordinator has informed that there is no charge ( I need letter acceptance from my University, Passports, Student Permit and Utility bills in my name), where as you have suggested me to budget 13k per year for child aged 7+.

Please advise.

Maybe they're making exceptions now? My friends had to pay (but this was a few years ago). I would go with what the school has told you.
