Hi,

I received my eCOPR, did my soft landing in Oct 2022 and only stayed in Canada for 5 days in the past 3 years , I plan to return to Canada in August 2025 to meet my PR residency obligation. Do you know if I'll be facing any issues while entering with the CBSA officer w.r.t the residency obligation or am I good to enter without any worries?

As long as you meet RO no issue. You will be leaving yourself with very little buffer time so you may have little wiggle room for things like business travel, family emergencies, measure travel, etc. We often see cases on this forum where people plan on returning right before they don’t meet RO but then run into a family issue that will delay their return, an emergency once they return, etc.

thank you , I also have a question when I enter Canada will they be seeing the date on the PR card which expires in Dec 2025 or on the COPR which says I became a PR on Oct 2022?

They will see both. The date you became a PR is on the back of the PR card as "PR since ...." [date]

thanks for the reply , I got married after I got my PR so my wife doesn't have a PR as of now, is it better if I come into Canada and then apply for her PR or can she accompany me on a visitor visa?

You have to be in Canada yo sponsor her as a PR and remain here
That’s why you’ve cut it very close with your RO. Aka you don’t have a buffer with days
You can try to get her a visitor visa . Some get one , some don’t
She has to show ties she’ll leave and return to her country. With you being here creates a very strong tie that she won’t leave

Is the "expires in Dec 2025" date a typo? Should be Dec 2027 perhaps? Given landing (becoming a PR) date of Oct 2022.

Assuming the PR card expires in late 2027, responses by others covers things.

If your PR card expires in Dec 2025, something here is awry.

By the way, if border officials, or the system, have any concerns when you arrive, they will review your immigration information in your GCMS records which will display all the relevant dates. For a PR who landed (became a PR) less than three years ago, that will be sufficient to verify compliance with the Residency Obligation.

sorry , it expires in December 2027 and I'm planning to move at the end of July 2025, what would be the best move going forward regarding my wife ?

If the date you became a PR was indeed Oct 22 (check on back of PR card) and you return in July 25, should be no issue. (As long as days outside Canada between date of arrival and date you return /date you apply to sponsor your spouse is less than 1095, no issue with residency obligation compliance).*

So return, get an address and things like that, sponsor your spouse.

*For others using this formula, it's in last five years or to date you became a PR, whichever is less.

thanks, what would be the best route to sponsor my wife? inland or outland? my wife does not have any Canadian visa as of now

If she doesn’t have a TRV there is no option but Outland. Your priority needs to be returning to Canada and being compliant with your RO. Your current plans allow for minimal buffer time to allow you to travel outside Canada if necessary. Your spouse can try to secure a TRV before your return to Canada and if denied they can reapply after you secure AOR from the Outland sponsorship process. What is most important is that you remain compliant with your RO.

yes I plan on making it to Canada by end of July and researching the best option to sponsor my wife, are there any advantages of doing outland over inland? and whether I should wait till i am in Canada to apply for her TRV after I submit her application and get AOR

Personal preference if you apply for a TRV now or after you receive AOR from the Outland sponsorship application. Your spouse can enter Canada and still have an Outland sponsorship application if she obtains a TRV. If your spouse applies for a TRV now and it is denied it will have no impact on the sponsorship application. Chances of getting the TRV will be dependent on how strong her application is but having a PR spouse will increase chances of denial especially before AOR from sponsorship application.

okay, is it safer to file for TRV after we receive the AOR ? and also is there a way we can file for work permit with outland ? from what I have seen online look like it is not possible but some people have done so

It is not about being safe or not. There is likely a higher probability to get approved if you apply after AOR but a TRV is never guaranteed. You can apply for an OWP while doing Outland sponsorship but the applicant must be in Canada. It seems confusing but you can apply for Outland sponsorship while in Canada.
