Hello Guys,

I just want to now if you have any idea if there's a residency requirement in sponsoring a family/spouse.
I got here in Manitoba last September 2014 and planning to file a spouse sponsorship for my wife.
We just got married last March 2015.
An immigrant assistant advice me that I should wait for one year before i could sponsor anyone.
Is this true?

Thanks in advance!

No - you don't need to wait for a year. You can file the application immediately. The consultant who told you this has no idea what he is talking about.

However since you are a PR, you must be living in Canada when you submit the sponsorship application and must continue living in Canada while the application is being processed. You take take short trips (e.g. 3 weeks) outside of Canada. Anything longer than that and you may risk having the application refused.

You should fire this consultant or not hire him.
Once you're married, you're married and that's all.
Just gather all the evidences you have proving your relationship is genuine and send your application.

How did you obtain your own PR? Were you sponsored by anyone?
I obtained my PR thru Provincial Nominee, sponsored by a friend.
Why? does it matter to our application? :)

No. I was just wondering if you had obtained your own PR through being sponsored by someone in your family.

Good luck!

Thank you for your response scylla and DanSlh,

Just a follow up question, when I applied for my PR last 2012 I didn't declared any spouse or common law or conjugal partner.
I entered Canada with a single / never been married status, Will that affect our application?

As long as your future wife was NOT really your common-law partner when you applied (and when you landed), you'll be fine.
