Hi folks, I'm looking for some information about immigration and residency coming from the US.

I came to Canada from the US last fall on a visitor visa, being allowed to cross the border as my spouse is Canadian. I activated an IEC one year work permit in December and am currently assembling everything for permanent residency, as I now plan to stay for a while!

I have been talking with a cross-border CPA about my taxes, and their advice is to start paying taxes in Canada for the end of 2020, as I am likely a resident for taxation purposes. This is fine with me, though I am not sure if I also qualify at the same time as a nonresident of Massachusetts (where I came from). The biggest complication dealing with this is my vehicle and drivers license, which are both from Massachusetts. I was under the impression I could keep my vehicle registered in Massachusetts for the duration of my work permit, and will only have to import it (hopefully avoiding taxes as a "good to follow") when I become a PR.

Does anyone know if I can keep my vehicle registered in Massachusetts for now, even if I start paying taxes in Canada as a fiscal resident? Is the only way to do this if I stay as a resident of Massachusetts as well, therefore paying taxes in Canada and Massachusetts (but hopefully not federal US taxes)? If I do have to import it now, can it still qualify as a good to follow even if I am just on a work visa for the time being?

I'm not sure if this is the best place for this, so please let me know if I should post it somewhere else.

Thanks for any help!
