Greetings all,

I'm going to be sending out my applcation in a couple of weeks but I've hit a bit of a snag. One of the requirements on the checklist is...

"Copies of your most recent T4 tax information slips and your Notice of Assessment issued by the Canada Revenue Agency".

I have my most recent 'notice of assessment' for the 2011 tax year, but I seemt to have lost my most recent T4's, so I'm not sure what to do???

I called my current company which I joined earlier this year, and they said they would be sending out the new T4's for the 2012 tax year in a couple of weeks. So I could enclose that with my application, but the problem is that my T4 would be from the 2012 tax year and my Notice of Assessment would be from the 2011 tax year, so I'm guess that wouldn't be allowed even if they both are technically the 'most recent' that I have in my possession.

Any ideas??

pete,

Enclose the documents you currently have in hand, and the new T4 they will be providing you. So, you should have 2011 T4 and NOA, as well as 2012 T4. In the package, attach an explanation letter that informs CIC you will be forwarding the new NOA when you have received it from CRA.

This should cover you temporarily (so that you may proceed with the application), but make sure you forward the new NOA as soon as you have received it.

Hi CEC2013.

Thanks for the response!

"So, you should have 2011 T4 and NOA, as well as 2012 T4."

The problem is I don't have my 2011 T4, I seem to have lost it :-( I only have the 2011 NOA.

Should I just do what you said and send a letter along with my application essentially saying. "Please find attached my T4 for the 2012 Tax Year and my Notice of Assessment for the 2011 Tax Year, I will forward onto you the new Notice of Assessment for the 2012 Tax Year as soon as I have recieved it".

The thing that worries me though is this...

I was going to apply for CEC in the middle of February, my current work permit expires at the end of June. My intention once I sent off my CEC application was to apply for the new 'Bridging Work Permit'. I understand that one of the requirements for the Bridging Work Permit is some sort of confirmation from CIC that my application is eligible for processing.

So, are the CIC going to delay in sending me this confirmation that I need to apply for a Bridging Work Permit, while they wait for the 2012 Notice of Assessment??? It may take several months for me to receive and send the new 2012 Notice of Assessment and them to issue you me this confirmation and I'm worried I'll run out of time on my current work permit???

Thanks!

pete,

I'm in the same boat as you, as far as deadlines go. If there are issues or your application deviates from expectations, you should always attach an explanation. That would then also apply to the lost T4.

I dont see it being a problem, as long as you are reasonable in your approach - meaning, you forward the documents in a timeline manner. You have the 2011 NOA, which then implies that you submitted a T4. If you explain your circumstance and provide the NOA, I dont see it being an issue. However, I can't speak to the actual reality, as I haven't gone through this. Maybe a senior could provide more detail...

As for the delay concerning the NOA - I hope not! In my letter, I emphasize that my hope is for them to consider the application, until I provide the NOA, which will be shipped overnight to them. "Consider the application" meaning that they continue to treat it as complete and hopefull issue the AOR. More than that is just guessing...

Besides, it states: "provide the most recent T4 and NOA". My interpretation is that you should provide the 2012 T4 and NOA, and if possible, the 2011 T4 and NOA. Most recent being the key descriptors in the checklist.

Hi CEC2013,

Thanks for you input, perhaps I'll post a more general topic on the forum about this and see if anyone has any insight.

Regards,

Pete

For sure - maybe someone else has a better idea. Also, I forgot to mention...

Additional supporting documents may include:
- copies of work contracts,
- copies of pay stubs.

In the pay stubs, you may see a breakdown of tax contributions. Thats something I will be emphasizing in my letter, as a temporary overview of taxes. To be followed by the T4 and NOA, when made available.

Thats all I got for now...

You could simply call Revenue Canada and ask them to send your 2011 T4's. It should take 5-7 business days. Hope that helps

What about in the case of not having a Notice of Assessment? Should I wait until I file my taxes for 2012 and receive the NOA before I send anything out?

You have to send the latest document . IF T4 is latest that is for 2012 and Notice of assessment is of 2011 then just send that . Please add explanation that you have not recieved notice of assessment yet for 2012 . If required they may ask you to submit that later .

Hi everyone,

Cgel, I thought T4's are issued by employers? If I call CRA they won't have a copy will they???

sabidhawan, if all else fails I was just going to do what you said.

Employers have to submit T4s to the CRA as well. It might be possible to get a copy from the CRA, but they will aks that you try to get a copy from your employer first.

You might be able to access your T4 online (if your employer submits the T4s to the CRA electronically), you would need to establish an online account at CRA -

@pete6256
If you will call Revenue Canada they will send you the T4's of 2011. The employer make three copies of it. One given to employee, one sent to Revenue Canada and third one they keep in their records. SO first try to get it from employer if not call Revenue Canada they will send you the copies no question asked. I got my T4's from 2007-2010 from revenue Canada.

Once you have filed your 2012 taxes(assuming you do it in or before March) you could send them the summary of your taxes given to you by the accountant(including 2012 T4). Write on a paper explaining that when you recieve your NOA, you will send to CIC.

This will work as i got this information from my lawyer. And after all you still have doubts you can consult a lawyer. Hope that helps
